About the program
Turnbull’s mathematics program goes beyond the Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum. Students experience greater depth, stronger reasoning, and meaningful problem solving at every grade level. Small classes enable enhanced learning with enrichment available for advanced students and support provided when needed. We use the Nelson My Math Path program, based on the Singapore Math framework, among other resources to create a robust, interesting and challenging mathematics program for all of our students. The math teachers in grades seven and eight are subject specific and specialized in the subject matter.
Primary, Junior and Senior divisions all employ the following mathematical processes for effective learning:
- Problem Solving
- Reasoning and Proving
- Reflecting
- Connecting
- Communicating
- Representing
- Selecting Tools and Strategies
What students will learn
Curriculum & learning approach
- Mathematics is taught in a manner where students revisit key concepts and build lasting understanding as they progress.
- Skills are strengthened over time as students connect new learning to their prior knowledge.
- Problem solving is central to instruction and encourages students to think through challenges with confidence.
Problem solving & real-world application
- Students develop flexible problem-solving strategies through meaningful and real-life learning experiences.
- Younger students explore patterns and number relationships using tools such as manipulatives.
- Students apply mathematical thinking through projects, ongoing mathematics challenges, and competitions.
- Learning feels relevant as students see how math connects to real decisions and outcomes.
Technology-enhanced learning
- Technology is integrated into daily instruction to deepen understanding and engagement.
- Mathematical and curriculum based objectives, such as coding, are reinforced through our robotics program.
- Mathematical skills are also reinforced through programs like IXL.
Enrichment & advanced learning
- Students who are ready for additional challenges explore advanced concepts through extension activities.
- Senior students apply integer knowledge to real applications such as midpoints and endpoints.
- Advanced learners explore exponent laws and apply them to algebraic expressions.
- Support is always available through help sessions, video tutorials, and peer tutoring.
- Chess Club strengthens logical reasoning strategy and problem-solving skills.
- Students can take part in respected contests including the Mathematica Centrum and the University of Waterloo’s mathematics and coding contests.
- Music instruction supports mathematical thinking and pattern recognition.
- Cross-curricular learning strengthens problem solving across subjects.
- Students develop a deeper appreciation for how math connects to other areas of learning.
